Thank you, Kelly D, wherever you are!
In the Fall of 1983 I went to college. I went to Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, a liberal arts college which would pair up incoming freshmen with upperclassmen in the same major. I was going in as a computer science major and got paired with Kelly, a senior. She was a big help when it came to studying and so on. Made me feel welcome and not so scared of being away at college.
Kelly also introduced me to comic books - Marvel and DC. Growing up we never really had comic books. We couldn’t get them in a library, so unless someone gave them to us, we didn’t get them. I knew Superman and Batman thanks to the old TV shows and the movies with Christopher Reeve, but not so much on other characters.
Of course, the X-men were really big at the time, and I quickly got involved with them and developed a crush on Nightcrawler. But I think my favorite that Kelly showed me was Daredevil. Something about the guy really appealed to me. Maybe it was the fact that yes, Matt Murdock is blind, but it didn’t hold him back. He’s a lawyer, too, and to an 18 year old girl, that’s a bit sexy. So, hey, I read Daredevil as much as I could. I was hooked.
Years passed and I fell out of reading comics as much as I had at Doane and later a Iowa State, where I reunited with Kelly in grad school. But my love for comics never really died. A movie based on comics came out, I’d have to see it. Even the original Punisher movie with Dolph Lundgren is still one of my all time favorites. (Yeah, I know) Then there was the Daredevil movie with Ben Affleck. Loved it.
I could go on and on about how much of a comic book geek I still am. There’s a shit ton of manga in my bedroom. I have stacks of comic books too. Hell, I have even made an amigurumi version of Arrow based on the current show.
But recently Netflix started up Daredevil as a series. I just finished it off about 45 minutes ago. I will be watching again…and again…and again. I was blown away. The casting of Vincent D'Onfrio as the Kingpin is genius. He’s been one of my favorite bad guys since Men in Black - another comic book movie. I honestly had goosebumps when Daredevil showed up in the red costume! GOOSEBUMPS!!! It’s not soon enough for series 2!
So, again I say “Thank you, Kelly D, wherever you are. This comic book geek is very happy right now.” And don’t get me started on the Avengers…..
